Mapei ECO Prim Grip
Mapei ECO Prim Grip Bond-Promoting Primer — 1 Gallon / 3.5 Gallon
Mapei ECO Prim Grip is the go-to primer when you're installing over ceramic tile, porcelain, VCT, natural stone, or any smooth, low-absorptive substrate that standard mortars won't bond to well. It's a ready-to-use, low-VOC, synthetic resin-based primer with bond-promoting silica aggregates that enhances adhesion of mortars, self-leveling underlayment (SLUs), and render coats — without sanding, shotblasting, or demolition.
The formula creates a rough, textured surface that locks in polymer-modified mortars, leveling compounds, and waterproofing membranes, giving your installation a solid foundation on substrates that would otherwise be problematic. Single-coat application means faster turnaround and lower installation costs, and the low-odor, zero-VOC formula makes it practical for occupied interior spaces.
Available in 1-gallon and 3.5-gallon sizes. The 1-gallon works for smaller prep areas and tile-over-tile repairs; the 3.5-gallon is suited for commercial jobs and larger floor installations where SLU coverage is required.

What is ECO Prim Grip used for? It primes smooth or hard-to-bond substrates — like existing ceramic tile, porcelain, or VCT — before applying mortar, self-leveling underlayment, or waterproofing membranes. It's the step that makes tile-over-tile and overlay installations reliable.
Do I need to sand or grind the substrate first? No. ECO Prim Grip eliminates the need for mechanical abrasion or shotblasting on most substrates, which saves time and reduces jobsite dust.
How long does it take to dry? Approximately 30 minutes under normal conditions before you can apply mortar or SLU over it.
What can I apply over ECO Prim Grip? Mapei polymer-modified mortars, epoxy mortars, SLUs (Novoplan, Ultraplan, Ultraplan Easy), patching compounds, and waterproofing membranes including Mapelastic AquaDefense and Mapeguard 2.
Which size should I buy? The 1-gallon covers approximately 150–300 sq. ft. and works well for residential repairs and smaller installs. The 3.5-gallon covers 525–1,050 sq. ft. and is the better value for commercial floors and large-scale SLU applications.
Can it be used outdoors? No. ECO Prim Grip is for interior use only. It's not recommended for exterior facades or installations subject to freeze/thaw cycles or heavy commercial traffic.
Is it safe to use in occupied spaces? Yes. Zero-VOC, low-odor formula is rated for interior, occupied environments.
What substrates does it work on? Ceramic tile, porcelain, VCT, natural stone, and cementitious substrates with well-bonded adhesive residue.
