Mapei Mapeguard 2 is a next-generation, flexible, thin, 40-mil (1 mm) lightweight, load-bearing, fabric-reinforced peel-and-stick crack-isolation, waterproofing, and vapor-control membrane. It goes down before tile, doing four jobs at once: blocking crack transmission, managing moisture vapor, waterproofing the assembly, and reducing sound transfer through the floor.

Mapeguard 2 prevents existing or future in-plane floor cracks with movement up to 3/8" (10 mm) wide from transmitting through grout, ceramic tile, and natural stone. It also reduces the transmission of impact sound — footsteps, dropped objects — and airborne sound through floors when installed under ceramic tile, stone, or wood floor coverings. 

At 35% lighter than previous generations of comparable membranes, it's easy to position and cut to size. The split-back release film installs faster than membranes with one-piece liners, and the white surface is easy to see in lower-light conditions. Rated Extra Heavy by ASTM C627 service rating — suitable for residential and high-traffic commercial environments including airports, malls, restaurants, and office buildings. 

Bonds to concrete, cement mortar beds, leveling coats, and cement backer units. Compatible with ceramic, porcelain, natural stone, and wood floor coverings.

What does Mapeguard 2 actually do? Four things: isolates cracks so floor movement doesn't crack tile, waterproofs the assembly, manages vapor pressure, and reduces impact and airborne sound through the floor.

How does it install? Peel-and-stick. The split-back release film lets you position and adhere it in sections — faster than single-liner membranes. Apply over a primed substrate; no additional adhesive mortar required for the membrane itself.

Can I tile directly over it? Yes — set tile with an appropriate Mapei polymer-modified mortar directly over the membrane after installation.

Does it work in showers? Not on shower floors or submerged applications. For shower floors or standing water areas, use Mapei Mapelastic AquaDefense instead.

Can it be used outdoors? With limitations — exterior floors require a minimum slope of 1/4" per foot for drainage. Not approved for exterior floors with inadequate drainage.

Is it suitable for commercial use? Yes. Rated Extra Heavy by ASTM C627, making it appropriate for high-traffic commercial environments including airports, malls, and restaurants.

Does it reduce noise between floors? Yes — it reduces both impact sound (footsteps, dropped items) and airborne sound (voices, TV) transmitted through the floor assembly.

What primers are compatible? Use Mapei SM Primer or SM Primer Fast for standard applications. For vapor management applications, use Mapei HM Primer instead.
