Mapei Type 1 Premium Acrylic Mastic Tile Adhesive — 1 Gallon / 3.5 Gallon

Mapei Type 1 is a premium-grade, traditional, nonflammable, acrylic adhesive for setting glazed and unglazed ceramic and porcelain tiles on walls, floors, and countertops. It is for interior applications only. 

Type 1 has excellent grab on tiles up to 12" x 12" (30 x 30 cm), is easy to apply with a smooth consistency, and has an extended open time — making it a practical choice for backsplash installations and wall tile where working time matters. No mixing required — open the pail and apply. 

It's rated for intermittent wet areas such as tub and shower surrounds, and works over concrete, cement backer units, properly prepared drywall in dry areas, and exterior-grade plywood for countertops. Maximum tile size is 6" x 6" on floors and 12" x 12" on walls. Not for exterior use, steam showers, submerged applications, or radiant heat systems. 

The 1-gallon is suited for smaller tile projects, repairs, and single-wall installations. The 3.5-gallon is the better value for full backsplash runs, bathroom walls, and larger interior tile jobs.

What's the difference between mastic and thin-set mortar? Mastic is a premixed acrylic adhesive — no mixing, immediate use, extended open time. Thin-set is cement-based and mixed with water. Mastic is convenient for interior walls and dry areas; thin-set is required for wet areas, exterior use, large-format tile, and radiant heat.

Can it be used in a shower? For intermittent wet areas like tub and shower surrounds only, where service requirements don't exceed ANSI A136.1 Type 1. Not for steam showers or any submerged application.

What's the maximum tile size? 6" x 6" on floors, 12" x 12" on walls.

Can I use it on drywall? Yes, in dry areas only. Gypsum-based patching compounds must be primed with Mapei Primer T before applying Type 1.

Does it work on plywood? Yes — exterior-grade plywood for countertop applications.

Which size should I buy? The 1-gallon covers smaller jobs — a single backsplash, a repair, or a small accent wall. The 3.5-gallon is the better value for full bathroom walls, larger kitchen backsplashes, or any multi-surface interior tile job.

Is it safe to use indoors? Yes — nonflammable, low-VOC, and low-odor. Contributes to LEED points.

Can I use it with radiant heat flooring? No. Use a polymer-modified cement-based mortar for radiant heat applications.
