Janka Hardness Scale

Janka Hardness Scale

The Janka Hardness scale rates the hardness of wood. The higher the number the harder the wood, the lower the number the softer the wood. This will tell how well a wood will withstand dents and predict the difficulty of nailing, screwing and sawing. This compares the hardness between the species of wood. The Janka Hardness Scale has become an industry standard for determining whether a wood is suitable for flooring.

Glue Down vs Floating Vinyl Plank

Glue Down vs Floating Vinyl Plank

Vinyl flooring is great for any room in your house, but which flooring is right for your home?

Glue down is attached to the sub-floor via an adhesive. A floating floor “floats” over the top of the sub-floor with out any adhesive. Glue down is a permanent type of flooring, if you are looking to change the floor soon a floating floor maybe a better idea. Floating floors are great for DIY. If you are not the best with do it yourself home improvement projects, you may want to look into hiring a professional for a glue down floor installation. Both types of products are great and will give your home a durable floor.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Professional

When to DIY and When to Hire a Professional

Many people are skipping the professional and doing home improvement projects themselves. If you are replacing your floors, should you hire a professional or DIY?

First be honest about your skill set. Have you ever installed a floor before? Do you know how to properly and safely use the tools that are needed to complete this job? Is the flooring floating or staple/nail or glue down?

Second check the time frame you have to get this project done. Does this have a timeline it needs to be completed in?Do you have time to get this project done before it needs to be? Are you prepared to handle unexpected surprises such as an unlevel subfloor?

The nice part about hiring a professional is all you have to do is choose the floor and make the payment. No need to get your hands dirty.

When choosing to DIY or hire a professional remember the end goal and what you want your floor to look like.
